I still have vivid memories of the day I landed in Hong Kong, China, the gateway to a world of insatiable adventures. I had never ventured so far from my small island Mauritius before, the gigantic size of the airport and the numerous transport facilities offered to Mainland China gave me a headache. There I was on the most comfortable bus ride of my life to Shenzhen airport, the scenery along the way was kind of awkward skyscrapers and loads construction work everywhere. Shenzhen was still developing and it was impossible for me to buy a flight ticket to Wuhan since no one could conversate in English. I finally spotted a foreign face who I rushed to seeking help. She helped me to exchange foreign currency and buy my flight ticket to Wuhan before boarding her flight. Since, my flight was schedule early next morning and me being on a tight budget, I decided to stay at the airport. At 23.00,the security guards came and one of them finally spoke English to only tell me “ NO STAY,LEAVE”, I managed to convinced them to follow me to the nearest phone booth and showed them my sister’s phone number. They called her and explained her the situation and she told them to please help me find a cheap hotel nearby the airport, one of the security guards took my luggage and hop we were in a taxi off to a hotel. Once there, I wanted to pay the taxi driver but he refused to take cash, I was so touched by his generosity. The airport security guard escorted me to the room and waved goodbye. The hardest part was yet to come; I was in a foreign country without knowing the local time, no watch, no smartphone or applications. I stayed up all night watching Chinese TV since it had time on the far left, 6.00 am I tried to explain the owner of the hotel that I needed a taxi to go to the airport but he couldn’t understand. I finally drew a car and he understand but he couldn’t get any taxi, so I decided to walk to the airport, on the way I saw two builders and managed to seek their help in carrying my luggage to the airport. I was finally there at the airport entrance and gave them 20 RMB each which was a lot of money at that time,in 2004. Anyway, this was the beginning of my adventure and discovery of the world.
